I have been a driver at Nomeco since 1998. My job consists of delivering the goods from Nomeco to the pharmacies. We are approx. 75 drivers covering the whole country from our branches in Århus, Aalborg and Odense, and from the central warehouse in Copenhagen where I belong.
Training with an experienced driver
As a new driver, you are trained by driving together with an experienced driver for 2-3 days. It is not only important getting to know the route. It is equally important knowing how to service the individual pharmacies. Roughly speaking we are on the streets for 24 hours a day in Copenhagen. The drivers on the night shift do not meet many people, while the day drivers are in close contact with the individual pharmacies. I work from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Autonomous work with clearly defined goals
The drivers know that as long as we do our job, we are free to do as we please. We know exactly what to do when we arrive. A sheet of paper tells us what to do and where we are supposed to be at what time. So we have a very clearly defined goal for our work which is a quite important motivational factor.
As a driver you must be willing to be alone much of the time. It is an autonomous job which means that we also have great responsibility. Particularly the drivers who work at night are not involving the management in their everyday work; they handle most things themselves.
Solutions for all the problems
Since 2000 I have been a shop steward for all the drivers. That is one of the reasons I work the 6-2 shift because there I meet all my colleagues. The daily contact with them is important.
As a shop steward I negotiate salaries for the drivers, see to it that things go smoothly and deal with many types of problems. We find solutions to almost all problems.
Outings with the colleagues
In our professional club we organize an event approx. every second year. Nomeco is part of the Nordic Tamro-group and last time we went to Oslo where we saw Tamro’s Norwegian warehouse which had been rebuilt to look like our present warehouse. And we have been to Poland a couple of times. It is always a huge success.
We attach great importance to those trips. Some of the drivers share a van without ever meeting each other. In that case it is good having the opportunity of talking to each other instead of communicating by leaving notes.
The sports club creates motivation
I am chairman for our sports clubs so I am involved in arranging the activities.
I play darts myself and go bicycling when there are general exercise activities. . It is fun to be part of. You meet other employees from the organization and we visit other large companies for the tournaments. That way you get in contact with a lot of people.
I cannot help getting involved. I think it makes my workplace more engaging.
