Human pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceuticals are registered and approved by the Danish Medicines Agency. They are also known registered specialities. The current pharmaceuticals which have received marketing authorization for the Danish market are listed in the Price List published by the Danish Medicines Agency every fortnight.

Pharmaceuticals comprise both Rx and OTC medicines. Over-the-counter products are divided into medicines reserved for sale at the pharmacies and products authorized for sale from outlets outside of pharmacies – the so-called liberalized OTC products, which are also sold in supermarkets and other retail outlets. If the product is marked with ”hf”, they may be sold in unlimited amounts to customers over 15 yeas old. If they are marked with ”hx”, sales are limited when the product is not sold at a pharmacy.

Non-registered branded products
Nomeco also distributes medicines which are not authorized for sale in Denmark but which have been authorized in other countries. They are also described as non-authorized specialities. Hospital doctors, GP’s and medical specialists may prescribe these pharmaceuticals following approval from the Danish Medicines Agency.
