Warehouse Assistant

I came to Denmark in 1992 due to the war in Bosnia. The first years we didn’t know if we were staying in Denmark but then I learned Danish and got a job as a warehouse employee at Nomeco in 1998.

From Warehouse Employee to Assistant
In Yugoslavia I was a music teacher and taught accordion. So the new job was different but I liked it. At the warehouse you have many different tasks apart from picking goods and put them in boxes. You must know how to handle cool goods, prepare invoices, control the boxes, etc. I like that the job is varied. Today as an assistant it is an advantage knowing all the different tasks.

Today I am an assistant at the evening shift and responsible for operations and 30 employees in the shift. It is an interesting job. When I was working as a warehouse employee, my colleagues also approached me with questions so that way it is not a great difference. But now I am able to make decisions on my own.

My working day starts at 3.00 p.m.
Usually I start work at 3.00 p.m. I check my e-mail and deal with tasks like e.g. work plans, sending off boxes and answering the phone. When the employees arrive at 4.00 pm I go through error lists with them – i.e. if anyone has made mistakes – and we discuss how mistakes have happened.

I must constantly be aware if things are going well. If there are sufficient boxes on the line, how they are running, if we are behind schedule, etc. I help out if necessary at the boxes, picks a few goods and allocate people. If, for instance, there are too many in a line, I move some of them to another line.

Evening shift suits me perfectly
I function best at night. I have tried working morning shifts but that is not me. I am under the impression that most of us like the evening shift. Maybe it is not so good if you have a family and children – I think there are only two who have a family. Actually, it happens quite rarely that someone wants to switch to the day shift.

The job in itself is not very difficult and not demanding either, but it is very concentrated. We work from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Then we have 20 minutes’ break, work until 10 p.m. and then 10 minutes’ break. You cannot have breaks all the time.

I like my job and give it a lot of thought, also outside of working hours. I wonder if I did it well, if I forgot anything and if there things I can do better.

Good colleagues
The atmosphere is very good and we laugh a lot. It is nice also to talk and do things together. For instance the evening shift has been out for dinner several times, e.g. at Rio Bravo and on to a disco. Last time we went to an Italian restaurant. We were 15 from the evening shift and we had a really good time. When I first got the job, we sometimes went out for dinner on Thursdays after work – at night. That is really fun.
