From teacher to HR Consultant
I work in the HR Department, and it’s our job to attract, develop and retain employees. To do so we have to develop the organisation itself as well as growing as managers. We need to create a working environment that makes our employees happy to be here. I enjoy working with people. I trained as a teacher originally, and after a couple of years working as a teacher I opened a cafe in Copenhagen together with my husband. I wanted to get back to teaching again and that became my way into HR. Before joining Nomeco I spent twelve years working in HR at Copenhagen Airport and in the advertising sector.
Finding the right person to do the job
All new employees have some influence on the development of Nomeco. The trick is to find the ones that will have a positive influence. The most important quality that we look for in new employees is that they share our attitude to quality. It’s also important to find someone who’s a good match for the work culture that’s already in place and who’ll fit in with their colleagues.
Developing employees
It is important that the HR Department supports development decisions made by company management. This can be via training to help employees to do their job. It can also involve people changing their roles within the company and taking on new management responsibilities. We often recruit internally and let our employees grow with the job. That makes it very important that we give them full support and the training they need.
Relations in focus
Employee training is very important to us. It’s of particular importance that all our managers are good at managing. To ensure this we provide a number of courses in coaching, project management, team working, interview technique etc. This autumn we’ll also be devoting time to developing internal professional networks for our managers so that they can support each other. In other words relations are firmly in focus – both between managers and between staff and managers.
Teambuilding help
We also spend a lot of time on teambuilding. We map groups’ strengths and weaknesses to see whether a group is well equipped for the job. I think we do a lot to ensure that there is a healthy working environment at Nomeco, and in HR we do a very professional job. They sky’s your limit really if your idea is a good one and you can back it up.
