Thesis paved the way for a job
The first time I came into contact with Nomeco was in 2001 when I was writing a bachelor thesis on the company’s former service solutions. After that, I did not give Nomeco many thoughts until my final thesis. At that time, Nomeco was looking for a Business Intelligence employee. I applied and got the job. We agreed on four days per week while I was working on the thesis. In 2005, I was permanently employed as a Business Intelligence Consultant. For a couple of years, I was the only one but today I am head of a department with five employees working with Business Intelligence. We have expanded fast!
One source of reliable information
Business Intelligence is all about supporting the company with analyses and reports on a homogenous basis. When we collect our historical data and all our figures, we build a so-called 'data warehouse'. The aim is to build one source from which all departments can request data. That is the IT part. The other part is making the analyses easily accessible and to create new solutions together with the customer. For instance a market analysis where we develop the tool which will enable the customer to quickly collect information on a certain product from a certain supplier.
Building bridges between IT and the commercial business
Business Intelligence acts as a bridge builder between IT and the business itself. We must be able to speak the language of the IT employees if, for instance, they are working on a specific type of data handling. At the same time, we must be able to speak business language and be familiar with the terms used by the sales people.
Many short projects
Typically, we have some regular projects running over a few weeks or months at a time. Our aim is to be able to develop and finalize projects within a short time limit. We prefer many small development projects where we are able to deliver something, and we prefer to deliver 80% on time rather than postpone the entire project. It is important continuously to be able to deliver a product to the business and there must be a certain kind of drive also in the short run.
Good to see the outcome of your work
Speed is an important element of the philosophy behind Business Intelligence. The approach creates impetus and eliminates the risk of a project losing momentum. And we do not encounter the problem that the current project becomes irrelevant to the customer. That is part of what I really like about it. You receive a product and work on it. It is good to see the results of your work within a reasonable time!
